Arrested Development

Starring: Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi (aka Mrs. Ellen), Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter

I’ve just finished watching the last few episodes of Arrested Development today and seriously, what a show! A pioneer of the documentary format (like The Office and Modern Family among others) this show was very well crafted and utterly hilarious.

The show follows a very, very dysfunctional family (the Bluths) and what happens after their father is arrested for what is later revealed to be “light treason”. Michael Bluth, the only sane one in the family (or so it seems) determines to keep the family together whatever it takes.

It would be pointless for me to describe the show’s characters, plot points, running gags and catchphrases (“Oh, come on!”; “Her?”; “That was a freebie”) as nothing that I say will do them justice, but the incredible effort that went into both continuity and forecasting was amazing. It’s a shame that viewers complained that the characters weren’t relatable and that the plot was too hard to follow because you can really tell in Season III with all the super-obvious previews (DAMN YOU AMERICA!). It got cancelled anyway – as the metahumour in the latter episodes of Season III shows.

Nevertheless, the show remains quality from beginning to end. I’m not a fan of ‘awkward’ humour in general but this show definitely pulled it off.

Least Favourite Character: The SEAL!

Poor Buster :(.

Favourite Episode: Every single episode is absolutely lol-worthy so I’m just going to go with Development, Arrested – the finale. There are no least favourite episodes in this show. Honestly.

Favourite Quote: Gob: A lady of the evening. Working girl. She turns illusions for money … tricks. (Cannot even begin to explain the myriad of ways in which this was funny!)

Bonus: A fan remade the website! See here!

So in conclusion, if you didn’t watch Arrested Development the first time round (like almost everyone else) please download it buy the DVDs. It will be money and time well spent, and maybe they’ll gain enough motivation to finally make that movie!

Ten million stars!

P.S. It’s very hard to write about this show and have it make sense. I may come back later and do a season synopsis but we’ll see…
